Soul Searching is Janvier's debut album, recorded in Chicago. Her band is a drum, bass, guitar and keyboards unit with percussion and some backing vocals. Janvier sings her own songs. She has a strong, soul voice, somewhat reminiscent of Chaka Khan, and the songs, while not that adventurous or outstanding musically, have a good feel; they're good songs. The material is mostly in an R'n'B / soul groove, with some excellent solo slots. The guitar work on a few tracks is fine stuff, particularly on a slow blues, Gypsy. What I enjoyed most about this album was the fact that it was recorded 'studio-live', giving it a warm, human feel, nearly always lost in the studio polishing of most R'n'B and soul recordings. - New Insight
